Getting Married in Paphos

Of all the places UK couples choose for a Cyprus wedding, Paphos is the one we keep coming back to. It sits on the south-west coast of the island, where the mountains tip down towards the sea, and it carries a particular kind of romance — this is the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, after all, with the foam still breaking over the rocks at Petra tou Romiou just down the coast. For couples it offers a rare combination: a working harbour and old town with real character, a string of beautiful beaches and clifftops, hill villages full of stone and bougainvillea, and an airport (PFO) that you can reach in around four and a half hours from most of the UK. After fifteen years and more than a thousand weddings photographed across the island, we know this corner of Cyprus intimately, and we'd be glad to share what we've learned.

This guide walks you through why Paphos works so well for a destination wedding, the venues we love most, how the ceremony and the legal side actually work here, and what to think about when you choose your photographer. If you're still weighing up the wider picture — legalities, timing, cost — start with our complete guide to getting married in Cyprus for UK couples and come back here when you've settled on the region.

Why marry in Paphos

The first thing couples notice about Paphos is that it doesn't feel like a resort that was built yesterday. The old harbour, the medieval castle, the UNESCO-listed mosaics and the lanes of the old town give the place a sense of history and warmth that a purpose-built strip simply can't match. You can have the polish of a five-star hotel and, ten minutes away, eat at a family taverna where the owner remembers your name by the second night. For a wedding that means texture: your photographs aren't all glass balconies and infinity pools, they're stone walls, weathered shutters, fishing boats and golden light off the water.

Geography is the other great advantage. Paphos packs an enormous variety of settings into a small area. Within half an hour of the town you can be on a sweeping sandy beach at Coral Bay, in a vineyard or olive grove in the Tsada hills, at a clifftop overlooking the sea caves, or in a tiny whitewashed church in a mountain village. That means you can build a day with real contrast — a relaxed beachfront ceremony followed by a candlelit dinner under the stars, or a hilltop blessing with the whole island laid out beneath you. Couples who care about their photographs love this, because the variety does half the work for us.

Then there's the practical case, which matters more than people expect. Paphos International Airport is small, calm and easy to navigate, and it serves a good spread of UK departure points, so your guests aren't herded through a chaotic terminal at the end of a long day. The short flight makes Cyprus genuinely workable for older relatives, young children and anyone who balks at long-haul. And because the west of the island is a little quieter and a little gentler than the busier eastern resorts, Paphos suits couples who want their wedding to feel like an unhurried holiday rather than a logistical campaign.

Finally, Paphos rewards a longer stay. Most couples turn the wedding into a week or more — exploring the Akamas peninsula, swimming at the Blue Lagoon, wandering the Troodos villages, eating slowly and well. That relaxed rhythm tends to produce the loveliest, most honest pictures, because by the time the wedding day arrives everyone has switched off and settled in.

Best Paphos wedding venues

Paphos has more strong venues than almost anywhere else on the island, and they fall into a few natural families. If you want the iconic Cyprus look — stone arches, a vine-shaded courtyard, the sea glittering in the distance — Liopetro in Kouklia is one of our absolute favourites, a beautifully restored stone estate built for celebrating outdoors. For something more intimate and full of soul, Vasilias Nikoklis Inn in Nikokleia is a 200-year-old coaching inn with a courtyard, gardens and a relaxed, family-run warmth that smaller weddings adore. Both are venues we know like the backs of our hands, and both photograph exceptionally well from first light to the last dance.

If you're drawn to the hills and the views, Minthis Resort in Tsada sits high above Paphos on the site of a 12th-century monastery, surrounded by golf greens, vineyards and pine — serene, elegant and wonderful for couples who want space and a sense of arrival. Elea Estate offers a similar elevated, green-and-golden setting nearby. For something more rustic and rooted in the landscape, the stone and gardens of these hill venues give a completely different feel to the coast, with cooler evenings and long, soft sunsets.

Along the seafront, Paphos is spoiled for choice. Almyra is a sleek, design-led five-star hotel right on the harbour, perfect for couples who want a contemporary, stylish celebration with the water as a backdrop. Its sister hotel the Annabelle brings lush gardens and old-world grandeur to the same stretch of coast, while the Elysium sits beside the Tombs of the Kings with its own striking architecture. Further north towards Polis, Anassa is the grandest of the lot — a cliff-top five-star with a domed double staircase and its own private beach, built for couples who want real scale and drama in their photographs. Further along towards Coral Bay you'll find the Coral Beach Hotel and Laura Beach Hotel, both well set up for relaxed beachfront weddings, and the dramatic Ozea venue out at the Sea Caves for couples who want raw, cinematic coastline. A little further afield, Aphrodite Hills offers a full resort experience with its own chapel and views down to the sea. For more options grouped by setting, our guide to Cyprus beach wedding venues is a good place to compare, and if you're after something smaller and more private our edit of small and intimate wedding venues in Cyprus is well worth a look.

A quick word of advice: the best Paphos venues book up a year or more ahead for the popular May–June and September–October dates, so once you've fallen for somewhere, secure the date before you lock anything else in. And don't be afraid to mix settings — a church or town-hall ceremony in one place and a reception in another is completely normal here, and your planner and photographer will help you make the timings work.

Ceremonies, beaches and the town hall

The legal side of marrying in Paphos is more straightforward than most UK couples expect. A civil ceremony is performed by the Marriage Officer at Paphos town hall (or at an approved venue, or even on one of the municipality's beaches), and you apply to that local Marriage Officer for your district — note that Paphos is the PFO district, distinct from Larnaca or Limassol, so make sure your paperwork is filed with the right office. There's no residency period: you'll need to apply in person at least one working day before the ceremony, bring the required documents, and have two witnesses. A symbolic ceremony or blessing, by contrast, carries no legal weight but can be held literally anywhere — which is why so many couples handle the legal formality quietly at the town hall and then have their "real" celebration on a beach, in a garden or up in the hills.

Paphos is made for outdoor ceremonies. The beaches around Coral Bay and the resort frontages give you soft sand and open water; the clifftops near the Sea Caves give drama; and the hill venues give you that golden, end-of-day light spilling across the vines. If you'd like the romance of a church, the little chapel of Ayia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa in the old town sits among ancient ruins and St Paul's Pillar — a beautiful and deeply atmospheric spot — though religious ceremonies have their own requirements, so check early what is possible for your situation.

Timing is everything for an outdoor day, and it's worth being honest about the heat. From late June into early September the midday sun is fierce, and we almost always steer couples towards a late-afternoon or sunset ceremony so that you're saying your vows in flattering, comfortable light rather than squinting through the glare. The shoulder seasons of May–June and September–October are the sweet spot — warm enough for the sea and the celebration, soft enough for the photographs; our guide to the best time to get married in Cyprus digs into this month by month, and if budget is shaping your decision the Cyprus wedding cost guide sets out what to expect. Whatever you choose, a good local planner is invaluable for coordinating the town hall, the witnesses, the venue and the suppliers so that the only thing you have to think about on the day is each other.

One last thing worth saying: Paphos rewards couples who plan the day around the light rather than around the clock. We'll happily build a loose timeline with you that puts your ceremony, your portraits and your golden-hour moments where they belong, and leaves plenty of room to simply enjoy it.

Your Paphos wedding photographer

We're Nick and Aimie Wild, the husband-and-wife team behind Beziique, and Paphos is home turf for us. Over fifteen years and more than a thousand weddings we've photographed every kind of celebration this region offers — clifftop blessings, harbour-front receptions, tiny elopements in the hills and full-throated family parties that run until the small hours. We're a multi-award-winning team, but what we're proudest of is the way our pictures actually feel: documentary, emotional, unposed, the real day as it happened rather than a stiff set of arrangements.

Knowing the area as well as we do genuinely changes the photographs. We know which beach catches the last light, where to stand at Liopetro when the sun drops behind the hills, which corner of the Vasilias courtyard glows at dusk, and how the sea caves look in the half-hour before sunset. That local knowledge means less time herding you around and more time letting the day unfold — which is exactly how the best, most natural images happen. Aimie is also a wedding singer, so if you'd like live music woven into your ceremony or reception, that's something we can talk through too.

The best way to get a feel for our work is to see it, so do spend some time in our portfolio — much of it shot right here in Paphos and across the west of the island. When you're ready to talk dates, settings and what your day might look like, we'd love to hear from you. You can read more about working with us on our Paphos wedding photographer page, and then simply get in touch — early enquiries are wise, because we only take a limited number of weddings each year and the prime dates go first.

  • How far is Cyprus to fly from the UK?

Most UK airports have direct routes into Cyprus in around four and a half hours, so as a Cyprus wedding photographer covering both ends of the island, we see couples fly comfortably from regional airports as well as London. Paphos International Airport (PFO) and Larnaca (LCA) between them cover most of the UK's major departure points, which is a big part of why a Cyprus destination wedding is so manageable for guests of every age.

For a Paphos wedding, most UK couples fly directly into Paphos International Airport (PFO), which is only a short transfer from the town and most of the venues mentioned above.

  • How long do we have to be in Cyprus before a Paphos wedding?

Your paperwork is lodged with the Marriage Officer at Paphos town hall, and there's no residency requirement: you apply in person at least one working day before the ceremony, though the town hall likes to see around three working days as a comfortable buffer to get everything processed. Most UK couples marrying in Paphos simply fly out a few days early to settle in and meet their planner before the appointment.

  • When is the best time of year to marry in Paphos?

In Paphos specifically, May, June, September and October are when we'd point most couples — daytime temperatures typically sit in the high 20s°C, the sea is warm, and the evening light turns soft and golden, which is as good as it gets for photography. July and August regularly push into the low-to-mid 30s°C, particularly at the hill venues inland, so we always build those weddings around a later ceremony and let the worst of the heat pass before anyone's standing in the sun. Winter is quieter, considerably cheaper, and still perfectly workable for an intimate, low-key celebration.

  • How soon will we get our Paphos wedding photos?

Your complete gallery follows in around six to ten weeks, with every single frame hand-edited in our documentary style — nothing templated, nothing rushed. It's the same process whether it's your first enquiry or your five-hundredth Beziique wedding, because as your Paphos wedding photographer, the editing is the part we never cut corners on.
